WRITER'S GUIDELINES AND MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
For Submission of Articles to NLSC's Journal, VERITAS
- NUMBER OF COPIES AND FORMAT:
All submissions must be typed
and double-spaced. Three hard copies of each submission must be provided as well as one
diskette in Word or WordPerfect format. For non-solicited submissions,
send complete manuscript with a cover letter that gives a concise summary of your intent.
All four margins should be one inch.
- ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS:
In lieu of sending a
diskette, the fourth copy of each submission may be made as an attachment via e-mail to veritas@natlaw.org. If you transmit a submission via
modem, your three hard copies must be sent within ten days of your Internet submission.
- BINDERS:
Do not submit a binder or other cover. Staple manuscript pages together and
make sure that your name, address, and telephone number is on each page of your
submission.
- RETURN OF SUBMISSIONS:
No submissions will be returned. However, enclose a stamped
self-addressed post-card for verification of receipt.
- COPYRIGHT:
Submissions do not have to be original material for publication by the
Natural Law Study Center; rather, we are looking for educational, informative, or
scholarly pieces even if your work has been published elsewhere before. If so, we need to
know where the piece has been published and we need permission from the prior publisher.
Copyright law is complex and exists to protect creators of original works. If the piece
has been published before, we also require a signed and notarized statement from the
author that the piece is available for re-publication on the Internet. (Usually your prior
publisher is willing to extend these rights as long as proper credit is given.)
- LENGTH:
There is no word limit, however economy of language is encouraged and
deliberately considered in the review process. Most pieces will range from 800 to 1500
words. Longer pieces, only on occasion, will be considered for a two-part series.
- CONTENT:
We are NOT looking for negative opinion pieces; scholarly critiques and
comparisons are welcome. Since we intend to interrelate many disciplines, we encourage a
variety of writers from a variety of occupations and vocations. Although manuscripts may
be theoretical, philosophical, theological, jurisprudential, political, educational or
otherwise, each article must also provide an analysis of PRACTICAL METHODS of applying
natural law in each field. Be specific. Where applicable in all pieces, give examples of
how Natural Law precepts impact daily life or a particular occupation or vocation. Clear,
cogent, well-written and authoritative pieces that explain the Natural Law tradition will
be given preference. Format is varied, ranging from scholarly criticisms for a graduate
level audience to a more primary educational format for High School levels.
- WORKS CITED:
All pieces that refer to other authors must have a bibliography. Each
such submission must be accompanied with a complete list of all works cited, including
title and subtitle, author, publisher, place of publication, date of publication. Utilize
Chicago Manual of Style. Submissions which fail to reference other respected authorities
in the applicable field or fields will probably not be accepted.
- BIOGRAPHY:
Each submission must be accompanied by a detailed biography or curriculum
vitae detailing your educational and occupational experience, and a statement of how you
came to have an interest in Natural Law.
- PAYMENT:
Limited payment is made for assigned first-print articles only; query
first. In addition to above, query should include your curriculum vitae and should also
indicate author's familiarity with subject,
outline, list of sources, and previous clips. For most other articles, payment is limited
byline and contributor copies. However, many articles may be used in other
publications in which case some remuneration will be offered.
